Atlantis!

Usually I don't go for this kind of story, but after a little research, I have to admit I'll be watching this story to see it there is anything to it. Also it's just a few weeks until Stargate Atlantis premiers, so there is that too.

Here is one link about it:

Robotic Traffic Cones

This is a great idea and I would even suggest that this technology could lead to a rethink on how we design roads to begin with. If we can control the traffic dynamically, perhaps we could use the same lanes, in different directions, at different times of the day, based on what is needed and available at that time. Of course, if we can do this why don't we just have robotic cars?

Laser Vision
The vision of the tomorrow . . . TODAY!

Well we all knew it was coming, what I didn't know was - it's already here. All we need now is a few different manufacturers getting into the game to push down the cost and add features. I mean plug this in with a cell phone and portable (wearable) computer and you can literally do almost anything from almost anywhere.
Also once this gets into the mainstream we'll need new types of applications that let us tap into files, as we need them, to do stuff we have no idea how to do.
You're on a flight when the pilot and co pilot are suddenly incapacitated
(terrorist attack, dual heart attack, they both had the fish, whatever)
well, no problem.
Download the "How to land a 747 instruction file" and take the wheel.

Synthetic Life: Life Version 2.0

This is certainly worth a read through or two. Consider carefully the implications of such technology and then try not to just crawl into a fetal position in the nearest corner and just start gibbering to yourself. Also note how any local restrictions are practically valueless. Once technology like this exists anywhere, it exist everywhere. Once anyone starts down this road, everyone else must follow along or face being left behind and rendered vulnerable (at best) and obsolete or dead (probably both) at worst. At least this technology is safely in the hands of today's young students where nothing could possibly go wrong, or be misused, or anything.

Nods to Slashdot for this one.

Here is a really strange, and wonderful story about the Batman and Robin of Whitley.
Nods to Xoverboard for pointing this one out.

Commbadge Treknology
(My spell check is freaking out.)

Okay, check this out. A company has come up with a lapel phone that seems to be just a shade shy of an actual Commbadge ala Star Trek: TNG. This is just another sign of how Science Fact is closing the gap on Science Fiction.
I wonder if this company Vocera will license out the server side technology so that you could set up a dedicated, private network that links your phones and can be run from anywhere?
You know, like on an actual Starship.

Not that I have any actual need for anything like that . . . I'm just wondering.

Referencing Star Trek

An article from New Scientist today explains a new and compelling theory about the shape of the universe, turns out it may be a "Picard topology". I kid you not.

Meanwhile on Space.com there is a pretty good speculation piece (that makes several casual references to Star Trek) about what alien life might be based on. Mostly Carbon, possibly Silicon (but probably not) . . . uh, can you say "Horta".

While I'm on the subject, as any real Star Trek fans will certainly already know; Vulcan blood is green because it's based on Copper instead of Iron. Now growing up I remember committing this, along with countless and various other sundry details, to memory and classifying them firmly under total fiction.
I mean I figured they just made that bit up to make Spock in particular, and Vulcans in general, more different and interesting. A simple plot device that would allow Spock to face various menaces (like gaseous, red blood drinking, alien cloud creatures or what-have-you) and survive. Where a pure human would certainly have died, Spock being a Human / Vulcan hybrid, and having the extremely rare T-negative blood, like his father, would live to tell the tale and thus be able to save everyone else's bacon in the process. The crew would survive (mostly), the ship would be saved, and everyone would learn an important lesson on the value of diversity.
Well I was watching the Science channel the other day when they started doing a report on the usefulness of the blood of Horseshoe Crabs. One striking detail about their blood is that it is blue, instead of red, and the reason is that it is based on Copper!
I almost fell out of my chair when they said that. To my addled mind this raises some serious questions. Did the writers of Classic Trek know about the strange properties of the Horseshoe Crab blood back in 1967? If so, shouldn't Vulcan blood be blue instead of green? Was this just a lucky guess? Since when does any creature on earth have blood based on an element other than Iron anyway?
Just what the hell is going on around here?

I'm telling you . . . it's all in the Trek kids.
The secret to life is . . . watch more Star Trek!

On vacation this past week

Well I'm back after taking a week off for some richly deserved and much needed vacation. We didn't go anywhere, or do much of anything, but I did manage to get in quite a bit of sitting around watching the weeklong Deep Space Nine Marathon.
(MMMMMmmmm . . . Star Trek.)
In my efforts to reduce my overall stress level I avoided most of the news and just tried to sleep late, overeat and in general take it very, very easy. Of course this did not work out as planned and, let's face it, it just isn't a real vacation unless someone has to call for an ambulance and spend at least one day in the local ER. Am I right or am I right? But that's another story altogether.
In any case I'd just like to say; Happy Birthday Tim, current administration = lying bastards, Whipping the Easter bunny = almost funny, Eye Jewelry = very bad idea, and the next motherfucker who uses the phrase "separate but equal" as some kind of reasonable solution to the gay marriage issue can expect to be kicked in groin until they spit blood, or my leg cramps up, whichever comes first.

April Fools!

Okay, I was just kidding about that last story. I did get some positive feedback though, both for making people laugh and more surprisingly for my image editing skills. All in good fun.

LIFE ON MARS!
MARS ROVER 'SPIRIT' CATCHES PEERING ALIENS.

It's official there is indeed life on Mars! This photo from the Mars Rover 'Spirit ' captured a trio of little green aliens peering at the probe over a nearby crater edge. Marvin Gusman the NASA technician who had been watching the incoming data early this morning calls the picture stunning.

"I was processing the incoming photos, you know they come in first as thumbnails, very small versions, then later when there is time and everything lines up, we download the larger versions" Gusman explained "and there they were . . . when I first saw them, I choked. I spit coffee all over the monitor. I was stunned."

NASA Administrator Charles "Chuck" Garner also admits to being excited.
"This is just amazing. Cleary this exceeds our wildest hopes for this mission," said the administrator.

Reports say that while the aliens can clearly be seen in one photo they are not present in the photo's taken right before, or right after the one in which they appear.

"It seems clear that they must be living underground. They poked their heads up for a quick peak and then went back where they came from," Garner posited.

"I can't believe they're green," Gusman stated. "I mean we've all heard jokes about little green men but there they were. I still can't believe it."

NASA officials are preparing a more complete press conference for later today.
