Taryn takes a walk. Declan's escape! (test) Cartoons: There are no cartoons. I'm not a cartoonist. I'm just a guy with a lot of opinions and a strange sense of humor.

24, 2004 February 19, 2004 Site update: Well it's been almost a week and the excitement over the new Revelations trailer has not died down at all for me. I just updated the Revelations Page and made it much cooler. Well, cooler in my estimation, at any rate. Worked on it all night last night. Of course it's nothing compared to the efforts, talents and awesome power of Shane, Dawn and everyone else at Panicstruck Productions. February

You know civilization is ending when . . . Someone decides it's a good idea to make a KALASHNIKOV WITH a freaking MP3 player in the clip! Words simply fail me on this one. This must be seen to be believed. http://www.audiobooksforfree.com/kalashnikov/Ak-mp3.asp Power Problems on 'Opportunity'!? Here's the deal; a story just broke, on Google news, from WMCTV in Memphis, about a heater problem on the 'Opportunity' Rover. Now here are my questions: why is the story not on Space.com or the Mars rover site but somehow these folks have it? Also isn't suspicious that the second rover has now developed problems at almost the same exact point that 'Spirit' did? For my money it looks like someone is just looking to delay the release of any findings from the mission to the public. It seems very much like in both cases it's a matter of being right on the verge some really interesting data coming in when suddenly; "Oh sorry folks, technical problems, we'd explain but you wouldn't understand. You know real egghead stuff. We'll let you know when and if we get things working again." BAH! I don't buy it. Here's the link to the new story: http://www.wmcstations.com/Global/story.asp?S=1618714 Talking about Neural Networks, AI's, and Singularity . . . in the past tense. The other night I was talking to some good friends about AI's and the possibility of a Singularity developing in the near future or perhaps even in the recent past. We were just talking about all the recent advances we've been seeing, on so many different fronts, and about how long (or likely) it would be before a true AI makes an appearance. Opinions were varied and the discussion wound its way though issues like genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and fuzzy polymer brain implants. The question I was left with afterwards was; what seminal event, if you saw it, would lead you to ask, "Could this be proof positive that there is a true AI working behind the scenes?" What "miracle of science" is it, that once seen, would lead you to say "No way! No human designed this! We're just not that smart." Tricky right? Given the recent advances we've seen in the last decade or so some might say it's hard to even come up with an example. Here's a few examples I've come up with off of the top of my head: 1) the sudden production and proliferation of safe, affordable, flying cars 2) a true Star Trek like transporter system (I like that one, it doesn't matter when it happens, I just don't think we're that smart.) 3) working warp drive, hyper drive, or wormhole technology, within the next decade. Fantasy stuff, right? We're not going to see anything like that anytime soon. We've got better odds of Aliens landing on the Mall in DC and asking for some heavy water to power up their ship and directions to the Orion Nebula. Right? Right! Good, now that we all agree, whatever you do, don't click on the following links. http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/. . . invents http://www.nanomagazine.com/i.php?id=2002_02_15 http://www.imagination-engines.com/technologies/worldbrain.htm Needless to say I've read all of the above (and more) several times. The more I look into it, the more impressed I am with the work of Dr. Stephen Thaler. I just can't help thinking about the old story where some scientists are preparing an experiment to create the ultimate computer to ask it the ultimate question. They work for years creating a network that spans all known systems. Once all the computers are connected and working together they enter the question, "Is there a God?" The computer starts working and lights start flashing and blinking, and suddenly, out of nowhere, a bolt of lightning strikes the computer, and welds all the connections permanently together. After a moment the computer produces a short printout. It simply reads; "There is now." Most interesting of all is the fact that most of this stuff dates back two years! |
